BioDynamic Farming
Chemical fertilizers have not always been available for use on the farm, they became widely available after World War I when the potassium nitrates and phosphorus used for munitions got marketed as fertilizer. Although chemical fertilizers work, they are not good for the soil and do not build or improve the humus.
Today, Organic farming methods are very popular and " Certified Organic " is a marketing tool that clearly works. You find these products in every grocery store, some produce sections have a space just for the " Certified Organic " products.
But there is an alternative method that existed for decades before the " Organic " movement. It is called BioDynamic Farming. After World War I, a German named Rudolf Steiner developed the concept along with our friend Dr. Ehrenfried Pfeiffer.
BioDynamic farming treats the entire farm as a living entity and has a focus on building and improving the soil humus through composting. Although similar to organic farming techniques, BioDynamic farming is stricter and does not allow anything from outside the farm....no imported compost, no non-synthetic insecticides, no organic fertilizers ( only compost ). The whole farm works as a single entity....everything possible being recycled into the farm to maintain the fertility of the soil.
Dating back to 1924, BioDynamic farming is the oldest, non-chemical agricultural movement and pre-dates organic agriculture by some twenty years.
